The sport of poker is alive and well. If it isn't the booming online sphere, where hundreds of thousands of players compete amongst each other for massively inflated prize pools, it's in casinos up and down the land. Players compete against each other, forming friendships, rivalries, and communities, and perfecting skills and strategies along the way.

Don't take our word for it - digital software product reviewer Gitnux believes the global online poker market size could reach $237.5 billion by 2030, speaking to the booming nature of its popularity around the world. That trend tracks in Canada. In 2011, 2.3 million Canadians played poker for fun - that number grew to 3.1 million in 2023, with the trend still on the rise.

That could explain why there are bigger events than ever before on the Canadian poker scene. Below, we break down the biggest events to stand out from the 2024 calendar.

Newly renovated throughout, it is the perfect sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of downtown Regina, yet ideally located to the Casino Regina, meaning poker players can get to and from the table action within minutes.

In 2023, Canadian Rocky Luo came out on top in the C$$1,100 main event, winning C$78,342 in first place. There were 30 places in total, with those making it past the bubble paid out C$2,093.

It gets hot in Canada during the summer months - and so do the card games.

Also taking place at the Delta Hotels Regina in Saskatchewan, the Diamond Poker Classic offers events to players of all levels. In 2023, there were five tournaments spread across five days - available at $300, $600, $700, $900, and $1,100 buy-ins respectively.

The winner of last year's event - Aidan Tiefenbach - scooped a mammoth C$ 38,144, one of two major tournament wins that year, the other being a C$300 bounty event in Calgary. The main field was relatively small, with just 141 participants taking part, and up to 15 places getting paid.

Deerfoot Summer Super Stack

An institution of Calgary, the Deerfoot Inn & Casino makes for a lovely getaway for tourists and a warm and welcoming haunt for local players.

It also happens to host one of the most anticipated poker events of the year - the Summer Super Stack Series.

In 2023, the first event lasted for three days. There were also three satellite events into the main event, each costing $280 to enter, while the main event set players back a measly $1,500.

Why Live Poker is Better Than Online Poker?

It's an argument that's existed since the advent of the internet - live poker is better than online poker, no ifs or buts.

While there is always nuance to these opinions, there are several reasons as to why there is some meat to the bone of this take.

Here are five reasons why live poker is better than online poker:

  1. Physical interactions and social connections create a more immersive and fulfilling experience for all participants.
  2. In-person tournaments allow for bluffing and reading body language, adding another layer of strategy. When you play online, you have to rely on graphs, sheets, and numbers to guide your strategy.
  3. Brick-and-mortar casinos offer complimentary drinks and snacks, making the game even more enjoyable. Who doesn't love a cheeky beverage while having the nuts in your hand?
  4. Playing with real chips and cards adds to the authenticity of the game. No button clicking allowed.
  5. The atmosphere of a casino with its sights, sounds, and energy cannot be replicated online.
