Casino
IMDb Rating | 8/10 |
Release Year | 1995 |
Genre | Crime, Drama |
Length | 2h 58 min |
Director | Martin Scorsese |
Director Martin Scorsese's Casino (1995) is a classic in gambling movies. The film is based on a book by Nicholas Pileggi, which is the true story of a man who managed multiple casinos on behalf of the mafia.
The movie takes place in Las Vegas in the 1970s and 1980s and tells the story of Sam Rosenthal, the Tangiers Casino owner, who has connections to the mob.
Acting legends Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Sharon Stone contribute to the film's lasting legacy. The movie follows the storyline of their characters, Sam "Ace" Rothstein and Nicky Santoro, two mafia members who become casino managers. Things start to go wrong when Ace falls in love with a beautiful hustler, Ginger Mckenna, portrayed by Sharon Stone. Trying to maintain control of the casino, Ace faces troubles in marriage, Nicky's drug abuse and violence, and mobster interference.
The film portrays the extravagant old days of gambling in Las Vegas when mobsters ran casinos before the arrival of online casino operators.

FILM DESCRIPTION: The inner-workings of a corrupt Las Vegas casino are exposed in Martin Scorsese's story of crime and punishment. The film chronicles the lives and times of three characters: "Ace" Rothstein (Robert De Niro), a bookmaking wizard; Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci), a Mafia underboss and longtime best friend to Ace; and Ginger McKenna (Sharon Stone, in a role she was born to play), a leggy ex-prostitute with a fondness for jewelry and a penchant for playing the field. Ace plays by the rules (albeit Vegas rules, which, as he reminds the audience in voiceover, would make him a criminal in any other state), while Nicky and Ginger lie, cheat, and steal their respective ways to the top. The film's first hour and a half details their rise to power, while the second half follows their downfall as the FBI, corrupt government officials, and angry mob bosses pick apart their Camelot piece by piece. Molly's Game
IMDb Rating | 7.4/10 |
Release Year | 2017 |
Genre | Crime, Drama, Biography |
Length | 2h 20 min |
Director | Aaron Sorkin |
A more recent favourite is Molly's Game (2017), with Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba, and Kevin Costner in the lead roles. This gambling movie is Aaron Sorkin's first directorial venture. The movie follows the story of Olympic-level skier Molly Bloom, who became the hostess of the world's most exclusive poker club and the FBI's target.
Molly's life changes direction after a severe injury ruins her chances of skiing at the Olympics. She gets a job at the Viper Room, which runs weekly high-stakes poker games. Molly eventually becomes a game-runner with stakes as high as $100,000 per hand, making up to $4 million annually. The FBI finally shuts her down after a wild tale of drug addiction, mafia involvement, and a significant court case.
The movie follows her legal battle alongside her story of how it all began. The story even retrospects Molly's relationship with her father, played by Kevin Costner.
The screenplay is vaguely based on actual events. It's adapted from a book, Molly's Game: The True Story of the 26-Year-Old Woman Behind the Most Exclusive High-Stakes Poker Game in the World, which Molly Bloom herself wrote. While the key events are based on Molly's story, it's crucial to mention that filmmakers made some artistic choices to intensify the drama.
MOLLY’S GAME is based on the true story of Molly Bloom, an Olympic-class skier who ran the world's most exclusive high-stakes poker game for a decade before being arrested in the middle of the night by 17 FBI agents wielding automatic weapons. Her players included Hollywood royalty, sports stars, business titans and finally, unbeknownst to her, the Russian mob. Her only ally was her criminal defense lawyer Charlie Jaffey, who learned that there was much more to Molly than the tabloids led us to believe. Another of the best gambling movies on Netflix is 21. It is based on a true story and stars Jim Sturgess, Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey, and Laurence Fishburne.
MIT student Ben Campbell needs money to pay his tuition fees. The character got into Harvard Medical School but had trouble paying for the program. Then, he met an MIT professor who led a team of students who trained in counting cards. By honing their skills, they take advantage of mathematics and probabilities and, by cooperating, make money at casinos. Eventually, Ben's priorities change once he wins big money.
He makes risky decisions and jeopardizes his personal life and the team. The events take a turn once Ben is on the radar of casino security and law enforcement. The protagonist's ego blows out of proportion as he becomes increasingly greedy and makes more questionable decisions.
While the film is based on actual events, romantic subplots and cinematic twists and turns make it more dramatic and entertaining than the real-life version of the story.
"Inspired by the true story of MIT students who mastered the art of card counting and took Vegas casinos for millions in winnings. Looking for a way to pay for tuition, Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess) finds himself quietly recruited by MIT's most gifted students in a daring plot to break Vegas. With the help of a brilliant statistics professor (Kevin Spacey) and armed with fake IDs, intelligence and a complicated system of counting cards, Ben and his friends succeed in breaking the impenetrable casinos. Now, his challenge is keeping the numbers straight and staying one step ahead of the casinos before it all spirals out of control." This is for entertainment purposes only. As is the case with every James Bond movie, Casino Royale also involves gambling, mystery, extravaganza, and personal struggles. This 2006 James Bond adventure takes us to a luxury resort and a high-roller poker game. Daniel Craig plays the protagonist.
The plot is based on the first Ian Fleming novel, Casino Royale, published in 1953. Unlike other Bond movies, this introduces Bond as an emotional and flawed man.
