Croupier (1998), starring Clive Owen, looks at the gambling world through a professional dealer or croupier's eyes. Director Mike Hodge stays away from luxury casinos and instead focuses on the turbulent gambling world of card rooms in London. The movie reflects on the effects of working at a casino from a psycho-emotional point of view.

Jack, a young writer, wants to write a bestseller, but in the meantime, his dad helps him get a job as a croupier in a small casino, where he soon excels at his career. Throughout the movie, he gives viewers gambling tips, especially on roulette and blackjack, and provides insight into a croupier's life.

The protagonist initially sees this job as a temporary solution for his financial struggles but, over time, gets drawn into the enticing world of gambling. At the casino, Jack encounters various fascinating characters. Among them is the beautiful and alluring Janie, played by Kate Hardie. He also gets involved with Gina McKee's character, Muriel, who deceives him financially and emotionally.

Eventually, Jack turns from observer to participant in casino escapades. Then, he must face the consequences of all his moral choices.

A more recent favourite is Molly's Game (2017), with Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba, and Kevin Costner in the lead roles. This gambling movie is Aaron Sorkin's first directorial venture. The movie follows the story of Olympic-level skier Molly Bloom, who became the hostess of the world's most exclusive poker club and the FBI's target.

Molly's life changes direction after a severe injury ruins her chances of skiing at the Olympics. She gets a job at the Viper Room, which runs weekly high-stakes poker games. Molly eventually becomes a game-runner with stakes as high as $100,000 per hand, making up to $4 million annually. The FBI finally shuts her down after a wild tale of drug addiction, mafia involvement, and a significant court case.

The movie follows her legal battle alongside her story of how it all began. The story even retrospects Molly's relationship with her father, played by Kevin Costner.

The screenplay is vaguely based on actual events. It's adapted from a book, Molly's Game: The True Story of the 26-Year-Old Woman Behind the Most Exclusive High-Stakes Poker Game in the World, which Molly Bloom herself wrote. While the key events are based on Molly's story, it's crucial to mention that filmmakers made some artistic choices to intensify the drama.

Another of the best gambling movies on Netflix is 21. It is based on a true story and stars Jim Sturgess, Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey, and Laurence Fishburne.

MIT student Ben Campbell needs money to pay his tuition fees. The character got into Harvard Medical School but had trouble paying for the program. Then, he met an MIT professor who led a team of students who trained in counting cards. By honing their skills, they take advantage of mathematics and probabilities and, by cooperating, make money at casinos. Eventually, Ben's priorities change once he wins big money.

He makes risky decisions and jeopardizes his personal life and the team. The events take a turn once Ben is on the radar of casino security and law enforcement. The protagonist's ego blows out of proportion as he becomes increasingly greedy and makes more questionable decisions.

While the film is based on actual events, romantic subplots and cinematic twists and turns make it more dramatic and entertaining than the real-life version of the story.

Eddie Garrett (Jake Johnson) is a gambling addict. He struggles with compulsive gambling and chases wins. One day, he agrees to watch a bag of money while his friend is in prison. The friend Gene, played by Keegan-Michael Key, warned Eddie not to open the bag. His story takes a turn for the worse when he decides to use the money for gambling in hopes of making a profit to make up for his financial debt, but he ends up losing. This dark comedy looks at the funny side of a gambling addict's life. Will Eddie get a lucky break and the money back before his friend exits prison? When the bag owner's sentence' is shortened, Eddie must win the money back as soon as possible.

Uncut Gems is a psychological thriller directed and written by the Safdie brothers. The movie follows Howard Ratner, portrayed by Adam Sandler. Howard is a diamond dealer with a gambling issue. His charming personality and the challenges of his personal and professional life result in constant tensions.

The plot centers around a rare opal stone that Howard thinks will resolve his financial issues. The plan is to put the gem up for auction, but things don't go as intended. NBA star Kevin Garnett, who is portraying himself in this movie, believes the opal gives him powers in the game. Therefore, both characters are mutually involved in a high-stakes bet.

On the side, Howard is challenged by struggles in his marriage with Dina, played by Idina Menzel, and his unstable relationship with mistress Julia, portrayed by Julia Fox. The movie is about balancing all his hassles while trying to pull off the gamble with the opal.

As the game became more intense, Bond’s life became endangered, and his organization betrayed him. After the poker table, the action continued with car chasing, shooting, and escaping danger.
