Measles Outbreak Causes Concern In Canada

Caroline Colijn, an epidemiologist and mathematician at SFU in Burnaby, B.C.by, B.C., warned on the consequences of a severe outbreak.

“The worst-case scenario is that measles outbreaks aren't contained. Canada could even lose its elimination status for measles, which it's had since 1998.”

Quebec's public health director, Dr. Luc Boileau, also revealed the extent of the susceptibility of the Canadian population.

“The level of coverage of vaccination is not enough for us”.

He went on to explain that as many as 100,000 children in schools around Quebec are at risk of contracting the infection.

Canadian Health Minister, Mark Holland, remarked how concerned he and his government were at the concerning figures, and argued for a renewed political approach to combating the falling rates in vaccination.

“We’re seeing a lot of illness that was almost rendered non-existent, starting to come back because of vaccine hesitancy. We have to depoliticize health information. We have to be a society that follows science. There should be no partisanship in following the best health advice that’s rooted in science and evidence.”
